We use a great material: recycled hulls of Super Tanker and cargo. In that case we transformed it into a small vase after brass plating the outside. The surface of this material is due to the attacks of salted water on steel during 50 to 80 years. The ships are sold to a recycling contractor and send to India or Bangladesh to be disassembled. Often towed in order to employ less crew on board. It is then failed on a beach, generally by throughing it at full speed towards the beach. The beaches are selected for their weak slope and the lack of rocks.
The demolition starts with the removal of all the equipments, upper works, the pieces of furniture and interior decoration. The cutting of the superstructures starts then. The sheets and the reinforcements are cuted out with acetylene torch. The successive bridges are demolished one by one, generaly starting by the top and to the prow. Even if the term of “demolition” often has a negative meaning, the process of deconstructing allows a re-use of materials, and thus an economic and ecological gain. The equipment is generaly resold, the materials remelted (in the case of steel) or recycled (for bronze and copper).
