Slice of fossil wood on iron base

This slice of petrified wood underwent a process which we call perminralisation. It occurs when a branch or a trunk is covered with sediments during a very long period. Thanks to silicates and to quartz which contain these sediments, all the organic matter is slowly mineralized. We manage even to find the original nervures of the wood.
