The fulgurite appears when a flash of lighting hits a sand desert. On the impact point, the electrical energy converts in an extreme heat. So,the sand melts around the electric ark, making a sort of pipe (nowaday's regular glass is also made of silicia= sand). When cooling, the sand all around stick to this glass pipe. We find fulgurite in the deserts, where there is no tree obviously (Lybia, Mauritania). Fulgurites are very fragile and it is hard to extract them from the ground without breaking them.
